Helping our students find their potential
Mathematical and numeracy skills are an important part of our children’s development as it helps them to make sense of the world around them. Maths teaching and learning develops independence and decision making skills which permeate the whole curriculum. Maths is taught at Sandgate at a level that is appropriate to the learning styles, needs and motivation of each individual. This involves discrete daily maths lessons following the National curriculum in some classes. In other cases a cross curricular, thematic approach with an emphasis on sensory learning is adopted for our youngsters who have more complex learning difficulties.
Maths skills are taught through all learning situations throughout the day such as playtime, snack time or lunchtime. Students experience shopping in nearby supermarkets, trips into Kendal town turning theory into practice and real experience. As with English and Literacy at Key Stage 4 some pupils follow a Nationally recognised accredited course of study or continue with a functional approach encompassing real life situations for using Mathematical thinking.
