SEAS stands for: Social Communication, Emotional Development, Application of Functional Skills, and Sensory Regulation.

The SEAS Pathway is designed to meet the unique needs of our sensory learners.  As with all our pupils, our SEAS students will have a Pupil Passport on entry.  This will determine what motivates them, the best way to enable communication, what might trigger them, and any physical help they might need.  This will also run alongside a Sensory Profile, which is key to helping us understand how our SEAS students understand the world.

Each SEAS class follows the National Curriculum requirements up to the end of Key Stage 3, but with a focus on sensory regulation, and communication.  Much of the day will be spent with peers, learning in very practical and hands on way, which will help our young people have a more physical understanding of what we are teaching them.  The young people also have the option to have some personal space when the world is feeling over-whelming.  Each classroom has its own breakout space, so that each young person has the space to have some time to self-regulate. From Key Stage 4 upwards, our curriculum is based on Independence and life skills.  This is a vital part of what we do at Sandgate School.

All classes, from EYFS to Sixth Form have access to community visits, which means that as they grow through the school, they have the tools to cope with different environments, and social situations.  This leads to our SEAS pupils being able to function in the world with as many coping strategies as we can give them.

Activities such as shopping, Outdoor Education, Work Experience, Community Events, such as the Carol Service and Sports Competitions, help young people become community confident.

Our curriculum also has a heavy leaning on emotional regulation, and social safety, which is taught through programs such as So Safe.  Information about this can be found on the website. This, alongside our focus on the Critical Communication skills: being able to answer with a yes or no, being able to follow a routine, being able to wait, whilst also being able to make choices, gives our young people the tools to become effective communicators, as either verbal, or non-verbal citizens.

Most of all, we aim to make all our learning FUN, with a huge emphasis on having healthy relationships both in and out of school.
